VWPL Night #7: Game Recap

As we approach the final weeks of game play for the first inaugural season of the Valley Water Polo League, the Ducks made it known that they are a force to be reckoned with as they knocked off the Seahawks from a first place tie position in a 17-13 win.  The Vikings also held their own as they pushed hard against the Tritons in a 13-8 victory.

Leading Scorer of the Week: Dragan Bakic

With a total of 5 goals against the Seahawks, the Duck's captain lead the them to a 17-13 win. This is Bakic's 4th time as leading scorer of the week.

Leading Goalie Blocks of the Week: Garrett Richey

As one of the youngest players in the league, Garrett proved to be a defensive threat in the cage with 6 blocks vs the Tritons.  This is Garrett's first appearance as top goalie of the week.
Vikings' Captain Leads Team Against the Tritons

The Vikings and Tritons started the first game of the night with a very physical contest at St. Mary's High School.  With over 13 ejections between both teams, the Vikings proved that they have the ability to thrive in power play situations.  Early on in the first quarter, Nate Varosh and Joey Rossi each earned ejections while Chris Maldonado (2 goals) notched the first goal of the game.  The Tritons quickly responded with a goal by Derek Clappis who lead the Tritons with 4 goals for the game.  Cole Mahoney scored with a no-look shot while Joey Rossi quickly responded with another goal. Christian Foss made sure the Vikings were not tied by end of the quarter with a final goal. It was a very close first quarter with the Tritons only behind by a single goal (3-2).
The second quarter proved to be the turning point in the game when Andrew Vieira (3 goals), Chris Maldonado, Shane Mahoney (leading scorer for the Vikings with 4 goals), and Cole Mahoney (2 goals) all found the back of the net within 4 minutes of eachother.  With the Tritons only scoring 1 goal in the 2nd quarter, half-time scoreboard read 7-3.
The Vikings pressed on in the 3rd quarter with a response to 3 power play conversions after drawn ejections. Contributors to the 3rd quarter for the Vikings: Christian Foss (2 goals), Shane Mahoney with 2 goals in the quarter, and Andrew Vieira.  The Tritons fought hard in the last 2 minutes of the 3rd with back to back goals from Derek Clappis and Joe Dietrich.
The Tritons started the final quarter off with a drawn 5 meter resulting in a penalty shot taken by Derek Clappis.  They quickly notched another goal by Thomas Dietrich in order to bring them to a 4 goal differential.  Shane Mahoney extended the gap with a goal while Andrew Vieira put another goal on the board. The final goal was scored by Glenn Hanker as a penalty shot.  Matt Huiras finished off the night with 5 saves in the cage while Garrett Richey stopped 6 goals.

Ducks Prove Domination to Break Tie Rankings with the Seahawks

The Ducks proved that they were the dominant team of the Valley Water Polo League last night, defeating the Seahawks in a close fought battle 17-13. The Ducks and Seahawks were tied for first place in league play before their final competition against each other. The next time they could match-up again is in Championship on April 13th.

Bakic had a very impressive game, as the leading scorer of the night with 5 goals. An impressive squad accompanied him as Mike Haley and Todd Hosmer both had 4 goals on the night.  Todd Hosmer’s goal in the 4th must not go unmentioned as no one on deck saw it coming. It was a hail mary shot off an outside 5m foul that posted itself against the top corner of the net. Mike Haley as usual, had an outstanding night as one of the offensive and defensive leaders of the VWPL.

“We knew this was a crucial game to determine #1 seed in the playoffs and regular season championship, so our players put in all-out effort to get a win. Missing a couple of young players hurt our depth, but everyone else stepped up to occasion. Mike Haley and Todd Hosmer showed why they are former national team players.” – Ducks Coach, Dragan Bakic.

The Seahawks did not make it easy for the Ducks as they had serious offensive force, which was again led by Andrew Reego and Tim Urrea who each tallied 3 goals. They both continued to keep the Ducks guessing with their aggressive and outstanding shooting.

After the first half the score was tied 7-7, both teams knew the importance of coming out strong in the third quarter. Mike Haley drew first blood of the half, while Urrea answered back in the Seahawks next possession. With much emotion from both teams, it made for an exciting night. No one showed more animation than Manuel Zorn, who had two goals. Jason Wensley and Jake Hastie both had very impressive nights with 2 goals each with Jake showing off his underwater skills with a sweet steal late in the game. Calvin Watt also had a goal as well.

“Both teams played very well. We both kept scratching at each other and there were times the Ducks were able to capitalize. Though we lost, we can still take the positives from the game and incorporate them into the next few weeks and playoffs.” Steve Barrington, Goalie for the Seahawks recording 4 blocks for the night.

We must not forget about the help from Kurt Kautz who had 2 goals for the Ducks. Mike Maroney and Ryand Dingler both contributed a goal as well.  Charlie Hamilton had 4 blocks in the cage. Experience weighed in heavy for the Ducks who only have one loss on the season thus far. The Ducks are now in first place (6-1) and the Seahawks are in a close second place (5-2).

We are pleased to announce that Summer League registration has been opened.  Head over to the tab above to sign up and send to any other competitive players who are interested!
