VWPL Night #6: Game Recap

League Night Recap

The second round has commenced for the VWPL and as always, it was another great night of water polo. It was a very competitive night at St. Mary’s as the Ducks beat the Vikings 16-11 and the Seahawks conquered the Tritons with a 18-14 win.

Rankings as of 3/13:
1st Place: Seahawks (15 points)
1st Place: Ducks (15 points)
3rd Place: Vikings (6 points)
4th Place: Tritons (0 points)

The Seahawks dominated last night with leading scorer Andrew Reego who tied with Dragan while the Tritons fought hard defensively with Matt Huiras in the cage with 15 blocks.

An impressive 15 blocks put Matt as a defensive threat against the Seahawks. This is Matt's 1st  appearance as the leader in goalie blocks for the VWPL’s season.

With a total of 6 goals against the Vikings, Dragan lead the Ducks to a 16-11 win to close the 1st round of game play among all teams.

Reego totaled 6 goals against the Seahawks with a 18-14 win for the Seahawks. As a recent college graduate of USC, this is Andrew's third appearance as the leading scorer of the week.

 Seahawks vs. Tritons
Starting off the night was a fierce battle between the Seahawks and the Tritons. Early in the game, the two teams traded off on goals, however, the Tritons did not let up and sealed their opportunities with the ball finding the back of the net. The strong offense was complimented with some key stops for the Tritons, as goalkeeper and team captain Matt Huiras collected 15 blocks. Joe Orr and Derek Clappis were the teams leading scorers with 4 and 3 goals each, respectively. This allowed the Tritons to have the edge going into the second half, the score reading 8 to 6.
There seemed to be a bit of a morale change for the Seahawks, starting off strong in the third quarter and eventually coming out with the lead. Heading into the fourth quarter, the Seahawks knew that they needed to press on and win the period in order to come out with a victory. The Seahawks offense did not relent as Andrew Reego scored 6 goals while Tim Urrea tallied 4 goals throughout the game, accompanied by Jason Wensley and Mike Heberle each accumulating 3. As the time wound down and the buzzer rang, the Seahawks pulled off a comeback victory defeating the Tritons 18 to 14.
Contributing scorers for the Tritons are listed as: Joey Rossi (2), Chip Hanker (2), Jon Drake (1), Andy Brooks (1), and Thomas Dietrich (1). Added goals for the Seahawks include: Manual Zorn (1) and Casey Thomas (1). Seahawks' goalies had a total of 13 saves; Steve Barrington finished the night with 9, while Nick Burruel compiled 4.

Vikings vs. Ducks
The following match up was a thrilling clash between the Vikings and the Ducks. The first quarter was all about the Ducks as they jumped out to a dominating start and finished with a 4 to 1 lead. The Ducks team captain, Dragan Bakic, knows that every team in the league has to be respected and his squad had to prevent the Vikings from gaining a “second wind.” The Ducks continued to push forward and held their advantage finishing the first half.
The Vikings team captain, Shane Mahoney, was able to rally his team together and battle back in the third quarter. Frederick Ferrer, who stepped up as the Vikings goalie for the night, proved to be a major factor in the cage and totaled 13 saves. Nathan Varosh, the Vikings center, showed his dominance by racking up 4 goals for the night, while Christian Foss held his own at 3. Even though the Vikings found themselves fighting their way back and eventually tying the score, it all came down to the final 7 minutes of the fourth period. The Ducks team captain, Dragan Bakic, finished the night with an impressive 6 goals as Mike Haley followed with 4. The Ducks veteran crew was able to come out with the win.
Other contributors for the Vikings include: Chris Maldonado (1), Cole Mahoney (1), Shane Mahoney (1), and Jeff Hoornaert (1). As for the Ducks remaining scorers: Jacob Castro (2), Todd Hosmer (2), and Phil Berolzheimer (2). The Ducks goalkeeper, Charlie Hamilton, ended the night with 12 blocks.
